How Do I Know If A Breeder Is Reputable?

The defining difference between a Reputable Breeder and a "kitten mill" is the concern and responsibility the

person shows towards their breed, breeding program, fellow breeders, and their individual charges:

their cats & kittens and the kitten buyers. In other words: their motivation for breeding Ragdolls ~ Is it about

the cats or is it about the cash?

   1. The Reputable Breeder places cats & kittens by contract.

   2. The Reputable Breeder places cats & kittens with a health guarantee.

   3. The Reputable Breeder insists and contracts the return of a kitten should the purchaser be unable to keep it.

   4. The Reputable Breeder carefully interviews prospective buyers and has specific requirements that are to be

met, such as an agreement to never declaw, a timetable as to when the kitten will be altered, a requirement

that they will never be allowed to roam outdoors unsupervised etc

   5. The Reputable Breeder is willing and able to educate the novice buyer; they will happily answer any & all

questions regarding the breed and their breeding program.

   6. The Reputable Breeder insists on being informed of any health, genetic or behavioral problems their kitten

        may develop in its lifetime.

   7. The Reputable Breeder does not have more cats & kittens than they are able to keep clean, healthy and well

        socialized.

   8. The Reputable Breeder spends individual time with each of their cats & kittens.

   9. The Reputable Breeder is concerned with excellent temperament of their kittens as well as excellent health.

  10. The Reputable Breeder makes themselves available for advise and help to other breeders (perhaps even

taking on the mentoring of a new person starting up a cattery), and to their kitten buyers throughout the entire

lifetime of the cat they have placed.

Note: My opinion is that you will be happier buying your Ragdoll from an experienced cattery. Ask the breeder

you are considering how many litters they have had since the birth of their cattery. I don't mean to say that

beginners don't have good Ragdolls, only that there are many things they have yet to encounter in their breeding

program, and may have good intentions but are still making mistakes without knowing it. Also, they have not

stood the test of time so you cannot be sure they will still be here when your kitten grows to adulthood and older,

     to 10, 15 & 20 years old.

  • The Reputable Breeder spends large amounts of time and money on what they believe to be for the best interest of the breed, the cats and those directly and indirectly affected by their actions.

  • The Reputable Breeder sees their breeding program as an unfinished work, a creative masterpiece that drives them towards excellence and purrfection. Whereas, the “kitten mill” is motivated by profit. While the “kitten mill” is happy to sell quantity to anyone: dealers, brokers etc.  The Reputable Breeder insists on individual contact with each prospective owner and will only place a kitten after careful and thorough screening. Direct contact is necessary in order to insure a mutual compatibility between the would be purchaser, the kitten and themselves. Because of this great concern on the part of the reputable breeder, they will help the novice purchaser select the kitten that is compatible with their lifestyle, personality and expectations, even if it means talking them out of a cat or kitten. Screening is necessary to ensure a successful placement and this is mandatory for the reputable breeder.

  • The Reputable Breeder is concerned with pedigrees and the breed standard is of utmost importance to their goal for excellence and the betterment of the breed. Because we have the goal of betterment in mind, NEVER would this breeder think to breed without knowing the pedigree of each cat. {I believe it is best to stay strictly four generations apart in bloodline on both sides, in order to be sure to avoid any possibility of chronic disease popping up, like hip dysplasia in dogs ~ but there are differing viewpoints on this topic} A reputable breeder will own the right to breed, have the papers proving such & will know the pedigree of their cats, always. A "kitten mill" will not mind inbreeding if it is the convenient thing to do, will not mind having one male and 12 females, cranking out kittens for profit but never being able to keep back the 'best of the best' kitten as a breeder, so as to improve the breed. Every kitten they sell has a 'breeder price' no matter the actual quality of the kitten or lack thereof. A reputable breeder sells very FEW kittens as breeders, since very few are in reality, breeder quality. Only the kitten who is an improvement on their parents in at least two ways should be selected to be a breeder, so as to, in reality, improve the breed.

This breeder is willing and able to educate and be educated, has a willingness to answer questions correctly and cares about the concerns of the potential new owner. They will allow visits to see the mother and if available, the father, and kittens in their environment when it is feasibly safe to do so. The “kitten mill” may offer seemingly good reasons to meet in places with available kittens other then the raised environment.

  • The Reputable Breeder is willing to point out the flaws in the kittens they are selling. They do not paint a picture that every one of their kittens is perfect in every way, but will tell you 'this one is a little more shy' ' this one will most likely be a smaller adult' 'this one's eye color is a  little more

pale' 'this one has a small kink in his tail' etc

  • The Reputable Breeder insists on contracts and requires that the kitten be returned to them if for any reason the purchaser is unable to keep the pet. It is this breeder who shows responsibility to the breed, and the kittens they have “created” for the lifetime of this pet. Health records, pedigrees and care information are a source of great pride to the breeder that is reputable as well as a sanitary, clean, healthy and happy environment.

The Reputable Breeder lives around their cats and kittens, rather than keeping them separated from their everyday life. They raise Ragdolls because they love the cats, their affectionate nature, their beauty, their antics, their companionship. It is impossible to know what kind of companion cats their kittens will be, if they do not know how their own breeders behave at large in the house on a permanent basis.

  • The Reputable Breeder is excited at the prospect of furthering their education through breed clubs, seminars and will take advantage of available resources.  Every opportunity to participate in activities with other reputable breeders ensuring them that their breeding program compares to others within their breed group is looked upon favorably by this reputable breeder.

  • The Reputable Breeder realistically understands that sometimes things go wrong in any activity with live animals but, they maintain a responsibility to the situation, if it is within their power, they do what is needed to rectify a problem fairly. The reputable breeder does not abandon a situation.
